CAFOD LiveSimply Award
You would have to be particularly unobservant not to have heard of the 'Climate Emergency' that the planet faces, as drastic temperature rises threaten more erratic and more extreme weather - both drought (and forest fire) and flood. I hope that you have also heard that Catholic voices are making a major contribution to the debate - from Pope Francis' letter, Laudato Si', 'on caring for our common home' to the (locally grown!) http://www.journeyto2030.org. As a parish response, we've begun the process of applying for a 'Live Simply Award' from Cafod, which encourages us to make positive decisions ourselves (as individuals and as a whole community), in order to reduce our 'Carbon Footprint' and live in greater solidarity with the poorest people of the world - who are always the first human victims of climate change. We began the parish conversation on the first Sunday of Advent, 2019, inviting people to record their thoughts on 'leaves', which were gathered together at the offertory.
You can read those first proposals, together with Cafod's own suggestions, below. Some may intrigue, some may irritate, some may prove impracticable. But let's work together to make a real difference, in church at the weekend and in our daily lives. "Mother earth, who sustains and governs us, ... now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her." (Pope Francis, LS n.1) Let us respond to that cry of alarm with tenderness, love and courage; and let us give first place to the young and their ideas in our rethinking of our relationship to this beautiful planet.

For Our Homes:
Thank you for all your terrific ideas and suggestions for 'living simply' within our own homes (full list here). These are all ours to use, to share and to live, to help us all change our lives and to remember daily, God's creation and those poorer comunities throughout the world most affected by climate change.
For Our Parish:
These ideas (full list here) will be used to form the basis of our application to Cafod. We are currently compiling this and will be sharing it with the whole parish over the next copule of weeks.
